You can repaint, add cushions and buy a new rug, but if the lighting is wrong a room still feels cold. The good news is that lighting is the quickest, cheapest way to make a home feel cosy. Here are seven changes that make the biggest difference.
1. Stop relying on the big light
A single bright ceiling light flattens a room. It casts light straight down, creates harsh shadows and makes everything feel like a waiting room. Keep it for cleaning and finding lost keys. In the evening, switch it off and use lamps instead.
2. Layer your lighting
Cosy rooms have light at different heights:
- Low: a table lamp on a side table or sideboard.
- Middle: wall lights or a floor lamp at eye level.
- High: a ceiling pendant on a dimmer, or switched off.
Three or more light sources around a room will always feel warmer than one.
3. Switch to warm white bulbs
Check your bulbs. Anything labelled 4000K or higher gives a cool, bluish light. For living rooms and bedrooms, choose warm white (2700K to 3000K). It's the single cheapest upgrade you can make.
4. Light the corners
Dark corners make a room feel smaller. A floor lamp in a corner, or a small lamp on a shelf, pushes the walls out and makes the whole space feel bigger and more welcoming.
5. Choose shades that glow
Fabric, linen, rattan and pleated shades soften the light and throw gentle patterns onto the walls. Opaque metal shades direct light down, which is great for reading but less atmospheric. Mix both. Browse our lampshades for easy swaps.
6. Add wall lights (no wiring needed)
Wall lights add that middle layer of light and instantly make a room look designed. If you rent or don't want to call an electrician, rechargeable wall lights give the same effect with no cables.
7. Put lamps on at dusk, not when it's dark
Switching lamps on as the light fades keeps a room feeling warm through the evening. A simple smart plug or timer makes it automatic.
