Lighting guide: bulb fittings, brightness and colour

Choosing a lamp is easy once you know three things: the bulb fitting, how bright you need it, and the colour of the light.

Common UK bulb fittings

  • E27 (large screw): the standard screw fitting used in most table lamps, floor lamps and pendants.
  • E14 (small screw): a smaller screw, often used in bedside lamps, wall lights and chandeliers.
  • B22 (bayonet): the traditional UK push-and-twist fitting.
  • GU10: a two-pin push-and-twist fitting, used in spotlights.
  • Integrated LED: the LED is built in, so there's no bulb to change.

The bulb fitting for each light is listed on its product page.

How bright? (lumens, not watts)

LED bulbs are measured in lumens. As a rough guide:

  • Bedside or accent lamp: 200 to 400 lumens
  • Table or floor lamp for reading: 450 to 800 lumens
  • Main ceiling light: 800 lumens or more

Warm white or cool white?

  • Warm white (2700K to 3000K): soft and cosy. Best for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Neutral white (4000K): crisp and clear. Good for kitchens and home offices.
  • Cool white (5000K and above): bright and bluish. Best for task and utility areas.

Layer your light

Most rooms look best with three layers: a main ceiling light, lamps at eye level for warmth, and a wall light or accent lamp to add depth. Rechargeable wall lights are an easy way to add that extra layer with no wiring.

Safety

Hardwired lights and ceiling fittings should be installed by a qualified electrician. Always use a bulb at or below the lamp's maximum wattage.
